What is NYC Medics?
NYC Medics is an independent emergency medical response organization that responds to disasters internationally when local resources are overwhelmed or destroyed.
NYC Medics was started in October, 2005 when a group of medical professionals from New York City chose to join the relief effort in response to the South Asian Earthquake which claimed tens of thousands of lives.
In less than a year, NYC Medics has deployed to Pakistan twice, bringing volunteers from all over the world together to bring medicine where needed the most.
Good things come in small packages
NYC Medics has shown that, in an emergency situation, a small team of efficient medical workers can rapidly deploy to a remote location, and can treat efficiently patients self-sufficiently, or in association with existing resources, serving the needs of an emergent health crisis in ways which larger organizations cannot.
Independence is important
NYC Medics delivers healthcare and related assistance solely on the basis of need and irrespective of race, gender, religion, or political affiliation. Further, NYC Medics does not serve as an instrument of any Governments foreign policy.
How do they know where and when to go?
NYC Medics chooses its deployments in consultation with international coordinatiing bodies, such as the World Health Organization. NYC Medics also works directly with the host country to ensure that services are both needed and welcome.
How do they get to these remote places?
Journeys to NYC Medics deployments are often long and always require multiple means of transport. Past methods have included airplanes, helicopters, jingle trucks, mini-busses, cars, mules and, of course, feet.
Where do they sleep? What do they eat & drink?
NYC Medics' teams bring what they'll need with them so that they
can be as self-sufficient as possible-- everything from medical
supplies, sleeping tents, bottled water, dehydrated meals, and anything else
that is needed to ensure that resources in short supply in the disaster zone are used by the communities.
Where do I sign up?
NYC Medics is always looking for new volunteers. Applicants should be ready to deploy sometimes within days of activation, and must be prepared to commit not less than two full weeks in the field. Interested people should download and complete our application available on the volunteer page.
